Opioid Use Disorder

When you use an opiate, they bind to receptors in your brain that produce a euphoric or “high” feeling. That feeling is better than your brain expects, so it further rewards you by releasing dopamine which also makes you feel good. Dopamine is the chemical in your brain that is released when you do something that is pleasurable, including eating, sexual activity and drugs. Many drugs can cause the release of dopamine.

What makes opiates particularly difficult to stop, is that as you take more, the brain adjusts to the surges in dopamine by producing less dopamine or reducing the number of receptors. This causes an increase in the amount of drugs required to reach the same feeling of euphoria. When you don’t take the opiates, your brain and body go into a state of withdrawal, which can be painful and debilitating, causing symptoms that include:

  • Watery eyes
  • Runny nose
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Sweating or chills
  • Fever
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Loss of appetite
  • Muscle aches and pains
  • Restlessness, agitation or anxiety
  • Sleep disturbances

Buprenorphine Treatment

AppleGate Recovery specializes in buprenorphine treatment programs for opioid dependence and addiction. We understand that addiction is a disease, and treat it as such, in an environment of compassionate, respectful care. Buprenorphine and buprenorphine compounds reduce the effects of opiate withdrawal and ease the cravings experienced due to those effects. Suboxone® is the most widely known buprenorphine compound used in the treatment of opioid addiction. Others include ZubSolv® and Bunavail®.

Buprenorphine is a partial agonist and has a “ceiling effect”. This means that the amount of medication required is less than other opioids and has a reduced risk of misuse or overdose. Suboxone® is buprenorphine combined with naloxone. The naloxone works to reverse the negative effects of opioid addiction, and when administered on its own, can even be used to prevent overdose in emergency cases. An important part of your treatment is working with an experienced physician to determine the medication that is right for you. AppleGate Recovery physicians are experienced in addiction medicine, and will work with each patient to create a customized treatment plan.
